Pecos State Park

Pecos State Park, located 25 miles east of Santa Fe, is a National Historic Park in New Mexico. This park first began as Pecos National Monument in 1965, but in 1990 the park was granted state park status after it added newly acquired lands. This park is a great place to come explore the history of New Mexico's most important people and events.

History

Pecos State Park portrays major historical events that are split into separate sections of the park. The main section is the ruins of Pecos Pueblo, a large settlement established around the 14th century by native peoples. One can also explore a Spanish mission built in the 17th century and named Mission Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Porciúncula de los Pecos. Other units include the site of the American Civil War Battle of Glorieta Pass, portions of the Santa Fe Trail and the Forked Lightning Ranch Home.

Activities

Take yourself on a quarter mile, self-guided tour through Pecos Pueblo and mission ruins. There are also group tours available by advance registration, including tours through the Glorieta Pass and the Forked Lightning Ranch Home. The visitors center offers exhibits presented in both English and Spanish, 10 minute introductory videos and book sales. Families and individuals can relax and have a meal at one of the picnic tables near the mission ruins.
