Pancho Villa State Park

Tucked away near the Mexican border in southwestern New Mexico is the historic Pancho Villa State Park. This little-known park features lovely campsites and a fascinating historical museum, as well as plenty of desert hiking and wildlife viewing. The town of Palamos, Mexico is located just over the border and features shopping and fine dining as well.

History

Pancho Villa State Park was created to commemorate Pancho Villa's 1916 raid on the town of Columbus, New Mexico, where Camp Furlong was located. This attack killed 18 American soldiers and prompted the United States military to attack Mexican outposts in response. It was the first attack on US soil since the War of 1812, which makes it a unique historical site.

Things to do

The primary attraction at Pancho Villa State Park is the large museum devoted to the events of 1916. In addition to historical notes about Villa's attack and the subsequent US response, it features life-size replicas of period military aircraft and other machinery. There are also many lovely hiking trails around the park with information about the local ecosystem.

Where to stay

Most people choose to stay at the campground, which generally garners positive reviews from visitors. It features many flat, spacious tent campsites, as well as RV hookups, including electricity, water and sewage at reasonable rates. There are several well-maintained restrooms, including shower facilities. This campsite even features a covered playground for the kids. There are shaded picnic areas throughout the site as well.
