Oasis State Park

Oasis State Park is a beautiful 193-acre gathering place for wildlife, campers and nature observers. This gem is located six and a half miles north of Portales on Highway 467 near Eastern New Mexico University in Roosevelt County.

Wildlife

Within Oasis State Park visitors can catch a glimpse of sandpipers, quail, blue heron and more than 80 species of birds. Birdwatching is particularly good in the winter. The lake measures around three acres across the surface and is stocked seasonally with rainbow trout and catfish. There are various hiking trails on which sightseers may spy deer and other small animals.

Visiting

Oasis State Park welcomes campers, hikers, sightseers, picnickers, RV campers and fishermen. Amenities include a playground for children, restrooms and scenic prairies that provide a perfect spot to have lunch. Cooks can bring propane and charcoal, but wood-burning grills are not permitted. There are showers and electric campsites, and the gates are open 24 hours. The park is brimming with beautiful prairies, shady trees and rolling sand dunes.

Climate

At a 4,100-foot elevation, the temperatures remain fairly moderate year-round, reaching no more than 90 degrees in the summer and a mild 50 degrees in winter.

For family-friendly camping, sight-seeing or nature-watching, New Mexico's Oasis State Park is a splendid site. It provides a great place for children to play and for runners to exercise, and more than one aspiring groom has taken advantage of the panoramic view as the ideal spot to get down on bended knee.
