Leasburg Dam State Park

Leasburg Dam State Park in New Mexico is a peaceful oasis resting on the edge of the Rio Grande, near the historic Fort Seldon and 15 miles north of the city of Las Cruces.

Sightseeing

The dam itself is historically interesting; it was built in 1909 to help irrigate the surrounding area. The park around it flourishes with beautiful plants and wildlife. Fort Seldon, abandoned by the U.S. Army in the 1890s, is the site of numerous historical recreations and festivals held for tourists to show what life was like as a buffalo soldier in the old west. Thanks to the lack of human light pollution nearby, stargazing sessions called Sky Safaris are held there a few times a year. Every October there are tours of nearby Native American petroglyph sites and other archeological areas.

Hiking and camping

The area is a popular camping spot, with prepared campsites and readily available amenities. Even on nights that do not have Sky Safaris, stargazing reveals the beauty of the entire Milky Way flooding the sky overhead. Hiking through the park is a rewarding experience, as every time you get to see a new animal or bird. In fact, birdwatching is another great reason to visit the park.

Fishing and swimming

Of course, the Rio Grande dominates the park, and to spend time there and not visit the river is a shame. Swimming in the river is a perfect way to refresh yourself after a day spent hiking. If you do not want to hike, then kayaking and canoeing is readily available. Fishing may not net you much in the way of food, but it is the perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon.

Leasburg Dam State Park demonstrates why thinking of parks as "those places with the trees" is foolish, as the land within its borders offers so much to do and see for an afternoon or a weekend!
