Heron Lake State Park

Heron Lake State Park is located on the southern end of beautiful Heron Lake in New Mexico. The park land area encompasses over 4,000 acres, and the lake surface covers 5,900 acres. Gates to the park are open 24 hours a day and the fee for admittance is only five dollars per vehicle. Heron Lake State Park is a wonderful place to experience a number of different activities.
Boating and fishing
Heron Lake is a very peaceful and quiet lake where boats are only allowed to operate at no-wake speeds. The lake is perfect for sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and canoeing. It is also a popular fishing location that is known for its salmon and record-sized trout. Ice fishing is also very popular in the winter months.
Camping
There are seven different camping sites surrounding Lake Heron. The campsites are within walking distance of the lake and also feature boat ramps. There are showers and flush toilets at all seven of the campsites, and two of the sites offer electricity hookups.
Hiking
There is a five-mile hiking trail located with in the park. The trail is located on the banks of the gorgeous Rio Chama River and crosses over the river by way of suspension bridge. The trail offers many scenic views of the area and is an exciting way to hike all the way to the neighboring El Vado Lake.
Heron Lake State Park offers a number of enjoyable activities, including hiking, fishing and camping. The park is a great place to visit at any time of the year.
