Elephant Butte Lake State Park

The largest and most popular lake-based park in New Mexico, Elephant Butte Lake State Park, makes for a great trip while experiencing the local scenery and splendor of the state. The very mild climate of this park, located in the southern area of the state, makes it a great choice to visit yearlong.

History

The area was once part of a vast ocean over 100 million years ago, and it is believed that it housed many “giants of the deep.” It received its name because of the eroded volcanic core inside the reservoir that is in the shape of an elephant. Fossils are also commonly found near this area, particularly those of the stegomastodon. This makes this park an ideal spot for school field trips.

Elephant Butte Reservoir

Elephant Butte has a reservoir that was created by a dam on the Rio Grande in 1916. It stretches about 40 miles long and includes 200 or more miles of shoreline. This makes it New Mexico’s top water recreational area. The area is heavily worked on and watched by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Amenities

This park has some great spots for visitors to relax and enjoy. You can go to the visitor center, take your kids on the playground, go to the various sandy beaches, discover some quiet coves or go visit the various marinas.

Activities

This park is home to many popular water-based activities. These include fishing, boating, water-skiing, scuba diving, canoeing and sailing. You may also bring your houseboat or cabin canoe. If you prefer keeping your feet dry, they have activities for you too. Dry land activities include camping, hiking, picnicking and sight seeing.
