El Vado Lake State Park

Nestled among New Mexico's northern mountains, El Vado Lake State Park encompasses 1730 acres of land and 3200 acres of lake surface. Located approximately 17 miles southwest of Tierra Amarilla, the park is a popular attraction for outdoor recreation.
Activities and amenities
El Vado Lake State Park activities include boating, fishing, hiking, camping, water-skiing and cross-country skiing. Amenities include one group and 25 individual picnic areas dispersed throughout the park, 80 developed camp sites, 19 electrical hookups, two boat ramps and several restrooms with showers.
Rio Chama Trail and nearby Heron Lake State Park
The 5.5-mile Rio Chama Trail offers exceptional views, additional fishing, a suspension bridge and a chance to spot wildlife. It follows the Rio Chama River that connects El Vado Lake to Heron Lake. Designated as a quiet lake, boat speeds are limited on Heron Lake, making it ideal for sailing or windsurfing.
Wildlife species
El Vado Lake State Park, a winter nesting site for bald eagles, is popular among birdwatchers. Anglers enjoy the rainbow trout, brown trout and kokonee salmon that are often found in quiet coves surrounding the lake. Other species of wildlife include bear and deer.
Water activities
Boat speeds are not restricted on El Vado Lake, so this is the spot for jet-skiing, water-skiing and general boating.
