City of Rocks State Park

Natural monoliths

The surreal monoliths that form the City of Rocks were made from a volcanic eruption that occurred some 35 million year ago. It is speculated that the eruption was 1,000 times larger than that of Mount St. Helens. Erosion from water and wind over the years formed the rocks into the unique shapes they are today.

Stargazing

The isolated location of the park means that the night sky is very dark with little intrusion from man made lighting. The result is a perfect place to view the stars. Thanks to the entirely solar-powered observatory, it is possible to get the best view of constellations and other planetary delights. Several events and programs are scheduled at the observatory that celebrate and teach people about the wonders of observing the stars.

If stargazing is not your favorite activity, then there is no need to worry. This state park is packed with other outdoor activities like camping, hiking, wildlife watching and geology exploration. The park has 52 developed camping sites within the rock structures. There are 10 electric campsites as well as restrooms and showers.
