Bluewater Lake State Park

Do you yearn for a great weekend getaway? Look no further than New Mexico's own Bluewater Lake State Park. This 3000 acre park is situated in the beautiful Zuni Mountains, about 40 miles west of Grant, New Mexico. This park offers breathtaking views, year-round fishing, bird watching and geology, definitely making this a destination that has something for everyone.
Fishing
Bluewater Lake and Bluewater Creek are stocked with rainbow trout, native or cutthroat trout and catfish. There are numerous fishing areas easily accessible by car or on foot. Trout as large as 9 pounds are yours for the catching in the lake. The park also is a popular spot for ice fishing in the winter months due to its high altitude (7,400 ft) and location in northern New Mexico. These factors combine to make Bluewater Lake an ideal place for year-round fishing.
Bird watching
Bird watchers can certainly appreciate Bluewater Lake State Park, as it is either home to, or a resting place for, 68 different species of birds. Experts as well as the casual watcher are sure to find enough types of bird species to keep them entertained for hours.
Geology
Do you like to dig for fossils? Then Bluewater Lake has that hobby covered as well. With its location on the north flank of the Zuni Mountains in the Las Tusas Basin, the opportunity for fossil digs are plenty. The park resides in a valley carved from shale and limestone, with the limestone being a popular home for snail and brachiopod fossils.
Activities and facilities
There are many activities aside from those mentioned above that draw visitors to Bluewater Lake State Park. Some of these activities include winter sports, camping, picnicking, boating, water skiing, sailing, trails and wildlife viewing. Bluewater Lake also offers many types of facilities to aid in making your visit as comfortable as possible. These facilities include a visitor's center a group shelter, developed sites, electric sites, RV dump station, restrooms, showers, courtesy dock and a playground.
As you can see, Bluewater Lake State Park makes the perfect place for a day-trip, a week-long camping trip or anything in between. With the wide-variety of activities offered, the park is sure to appeal to the entire family.
